Bookish Witch

No Complaints: An incredibly short story (TWISTED) by Aashish Gupta

Blurb (as on Amazon):

Accused of jewelry theft, an innocent servant, Bhura, finds himself surrounded by the members of the Malhotra family. He takes instant revenge by doing nothing. That’s right. NOTHING.

Genre: Fiction/Short Story

Pages: 10

Format: Kindle eBook

Price: 49 INR/ $0.99

My rating: 4.3/5

There’s mayhem in the Malhotra household. The reason: the younger daughter-in-law’s piece of gold jewelry has been stolen. It is assumed to be ‘stolen’ and not ‘missing’ by all the members for their own convoluted reasons. In their surprisingly unanimous stand, they decide that the culprit is their house help, Bhura. Before Bhura gets a chance to defend himself and prove his innocence, the perfect vengeance is already delivered.

What I liked about the book:

  • The story is eerily close to reality and makes us question our own prejudices.
  • Each character in the book is authentic and we can easily find ourselves or someone we know in those characters.
  • The end is twisted, yet satisfying.
  • The incident becomes an excuse for each member to vent out their own frustrations, holding a mirror to our own actions and behavior.
  • Despite being such a short story, it is told from two POVs, providing depth and justifying the endgame.

What I did not like about the book:

-> Though it is a short story and the basic requirement is to get the message out in a few pages, the story does feel rushed and loose.

Quotable quotes:

  • Mrs. Malhotra Sr., despite having a full-pitched voice, continued to keep mum per the rules of patriarchy. Her husband had spoken. It was enough.
  • The idea that it could be the case of a ‘lost jewelry’ instead of a ‘stolen jewelry’ was quickly abandoned on the grounds that they had a servant at home. It had to be the case of theft.
