When Your Clothes Define Your Personality ~ The Founder Of A Statement Wear Fashion Venture Shares Her Story

Bill Cunningham says,

“Fashion is the armour to survive the reality of everyday life”.

In our #FridayFreature this week on the #WonderWomen segment, we’re proud to present a woman who’s providing the means to such armour. Meet, designer and a businesswoman with a unique fashion sense, Priyam Mitra. She is the founder of Choomantarrwoman, a platform, which in their own words provides “Unique contemporary Indian wear including sarees and saree blouses & footwear for today’s confident, radiant & multifaceted women”

So, what motivated her to start this platform and what’s her story like? Let’s find out in her own words.

“I had always been a believer in the quote that, “Clothes aren’t going to change the world, the women who wear them will”. Dressing up in a unique manner and wearing something that defined my personality was always a thing in me. Someone once casually remarked when around me that ‘Indian wear, especially sarees are not comfort wear” That basically sow the seed in mind for Choomantarr Woman.

I started it with an aim bring about a delightful and unique twist to the traditional Indian Saree and Blouse. I wanted to make it a comfort wear; something to be worn regularly at workplace, or festivities, or lounging with friends or parties. I wanted to create designer Indian wear with a fusion of Western and Indian art. Of course, I knew it wouldn’t be an overnight success or that starting such a venture wouldn’t bring up some challenges.

The biggest struggles I had to face were getting the right mix of fabric, bringing in the perfect vendors and most importantly reaching out to the buyers with the right message by connecting with them on a personal level. This personalization was what I wanted to be the USP of Choomantarrwoman, hence it wasn’t very surprising when the turning point for the venture came in through interactions with the customers and customizing our outfits as per their needs and choices.

At Choomantarr, we strive to keep a personal touch with each and every one of our customers by trying to understand their requirements. It is this interaction and understanding which helps us learn, grow and improvise with every design that we make. Apart from my own satisfaction at completing an order successfully, my biggest motivation is the appreciation and positive feedback from our buyers; especially it is the repeat buyers and their trust in us is what keeps us going.

We started with Choomantarr Woman in June 2018 through Instagram and FaceBook sale Platform. Today, in just less than a year and a half, we have a strong customer base, which appreciates our work and keeps coming back for more. As for the future, the immediate goal is that, in January 2020 we will be Launching our Website.

The long-term goal is to expand the customer base as well as our range of designer wear. We had started with just Embroidered Blouses and have introduced Limited edition Sarees as well. Soon, we also plan to introduce long and short kurtas, scarfs and much more by March 2020. Our designs are our USP, but besides that our top priority is the quality of work we do, and even the quality of the fabric we use.

We have zero tolerance towards inferior quality design as well as fabric. As our customers put their faith and trust in us and make their purchase decision simply looking at a picture, we take care to never waiver our focus from these two key points. As for the learnings, I believe that every day is a learning process.

I do not have a fashion Designing background, hence every little or big task, right from recognizing the correct fabric to putting the final stitching in place, is not only new and exciting for me, but is also a learning and growing process.”
