Hindi movies on homosexuality has become a hot topic of discussion ever since the latest realease Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga came out. Though the trailer doesn’t outright proclaim that the protagonist is lesbian, the subtle hints about her secret, point towards same-sex love. After the SC verdict on decriminalization homosexuality, there was rejoice all around in the country. Though this new movie seems like a big step, there are other movies in Bollywood that have executed the subject of lesbianism beautifully.
Some Hindi movies on homosexuality come to mind straight away. However, there are a few which many may not know about. For cinephiles, such plot lines and stories are just another excuse to appreciate good cinema, and for others, it may be finally something to relate to. Here’s a look at such Hindi movies on homosexuality, specifically on lesbianism.
1. Girlfriend
Though not great on the content, story and even the plot line, the movie did talk about lesbianism between the two lead female protagonists. Often seen as an erotic movie, the one thing that it did was give a voice to love between two females.
2. Fire
Surprisingly, with an ‘A’ certificate approval from the then Censor Board, this movie ran in theaters without any cuts for 3 weeks. That was enough to create waves across the country. Though the movie was soon brought down from the screens and even banned, it still remains one of the best Hindi movies on homosexuality.
3. Parched
Though not entirely a lesbian movie, we do see intimacy between Radhika Apte and Tannishtha Chatterjee in one scene. However, this is a film that has female protagonists and worth a watch.
3. Margarita With A Straw
This movie showed a differently-abled woman as being bisexual. When we weren’t and aren’t able to accept homosexuality and bisexuality in even abled citizens, Kalki dared to portray an autistic bisexual woman, and that too quite convincingly.
4. Dedh Ishqiya
It was very subtly put, but there were some who did identify more than just friendship between lead female characters of Begum Para and Munniya.
5. Heroine
For the first time, an A-Lister like Kareena Kapoor Khan was subtly shown as a bisexual woman in Madhur Bhandarkar’s Heroine. The way it was handled wasn’t great, but it was there to identify and address.
